TECHNOPOLIS

Technopolis is the permanent exhibition at Motherwell Heritage Centre and takes the visitor on a journey through time, telling the history of the area and the people who lived there using a series of multi-media environments in which people from the past and present discuss their dreams, fears and ambitions.

The first gallery the visitor enters introduces four characters from Motherwell's past, from Roman times to the 19th Century. These characters give a short talk on their lives and times before the visitor moves on to the Industrial Gallery.

Introductory Gallery

Iron workers in the Industrial Gallery

The Industrial Gallery tells the story of the arrival of heavy industry in the Motherwell area, emphasising the impact of the coal and iron industries and how it affected the lives of the people who worked in them. Touch-screen information points allow the visitor to obtain more information and video screens show working life in some of the works and factories.

The tour continues through a Victorian street and into the 1920's and 1930's via the First World War. A trip to the cinema shows a newsreel of Motherwell in the late 1930's. From here the journey continues through the Second World War and into the 1950's. A trip to the swimming pool is followed by a visit to a 1960's high flat. The story of Ravenscraig, the once-proud steelworks now demolished, is next and then the Dream Machine, where visitors can interact with characters from Motherwell's past to find out about their lives, their hopes and their ambitions.

1930's Gallery

The Technopolis tour brings the history of Motherwell vividly to life and allows visitors to explore at their leisure many of the events and colourful characters that have helped to shape the Motherwell of today.
